frlit1-10, Exercise 3: Masterpieces, institution or argument Model answer (an example): All three, and each shapes the others. Masterpieces: the Chanson de Roland, Madame Bovary and Proust are known because schools, prizes and publishers taught, prized and defended them (Chapters 2, 7 and 9). Institution: the Academie francaise, the salons and the prize season decided what writers could say and how they were heard (Chapters 1, 4 and 5). Argument: from Montaigne's tolerance through Voltaire's campaigns to Zola's open letter, writers have used their prestige to contest public questions, and that is what ties the other two together. Any argument is acceptable if it uses at least three chapters and gives reasons.
