frfilmtv1-5, Exercise 1: Critics who became directors Model answer: The magazine Cahiers du cinéma, founded in 1951 by a group including André Bazin, was the training ground. Its young writers spent their evenings at the Cinémathèque française watching films from all countries and eras, attacked the cinema of quality, and then made their own films. Four of them (any four): François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette. The auteur idea (politique des auteurs) meant that a great director stamps a personal vision on a film and is its real author, as with Hitchcock and Hawks, whom they admired.
