frfilmtv1-4, Exercise 2: Blum-Byrnes and the CNC Model answer: The Blum-Byrnes agreement (1946) was a financial agreement between France and the United States: the United States cancelled part of France's war debt and gave new loans, and French cinemas agreed to show more American films. French film workers protested, fearing the industry would be swamped (check the terms). The CNC (Centre national de la cinématographie) was set up in 1946 as a state body for cinema, taking over from the wartime organisation, and grew into the main channel for state support of film. Together they began the long argument about how to keep a national cinema alive beside the American one, which runs through the course to Chapter 10.
