frfilmtv1-3, Exercise 2: Poetic realism Model answer: Poetic realism is the label for a group of late-1930s films in which working-class settings, shadowy streets and doomed romances give ordinary life a melancholy beauty. Director: Marcel Carné. Scriptwriter: the poet Jacques Prévert. Star: Jean Gabin. Film: Quai des brumes (1938) or Le Jour se lève (1939). (Pépé le Moko, by Julien Duvivier, is another example.) Linking it to prewar anxiety is an interpretation because the films are pessimistic and were made in the years before the Second World War, but the link is a later reading and not proof that the film-makers intended it.
