frfilmtv1-2, Exercise 1: The Lumière screening Model answer: Auguste and Louis Lumière patented the Cinématographe in 1895, a compact device that worked as a camera, developer and projector in one. On 28 December 1895 they gave a public screening to a paying audience in the basement of the Grand Café in Paris. The programme was a set of short films, each under a minute, filmed with a fixed camera in a single take: workers leaving the Lumière factory, a baby being fed, and the comic L'Arroseur arrosé. It is safest to say "among the first" because others, including inventors in Germany and the United States, have claims to earlier or similar public shows in 1895. The Lumière show was one of several, and the one that did most to start an industry. Check the dates in a film reference.
