Its own real-time multiplayer model, established in Chapter 1, became a genuine competitive advantage that reshaped how design teams actually work together, not just a nice extra feature.

Penpot: Free, Open-Source, and Genuinely Figma-Inspired

Penpot is free, open-source, and browser-based, built with a visual language and toolset deliberately similar to Figma's own — frames, components, and a comparable design-to-prototype workflow, running in a browser the same way Figma does. Unlike Inkscape, which developed largely independently of Illustrator's own interface conventions, Penpot was built specifically as an open alternative to Figma, and it shows in how directly its own workflow maps onto Figma's.

Why This Split Is More Lopsided Than Illustrator/Inkscape

Illustrator holds a strong lead over Inkscape, but Inkscape has existed for decades, with a large, mature user base and deep production use in its own right. "Open-source alternative" doesn't automatically mean "equally viable choice"
It's tempting to assume every free, open-source alternative to a dominant commercial tool is roughly as viable a choice, the way Inkscape genuinely is next to Illustrator. Penpot is a real, capable tool worth knowing, but pretending it's currently an equally strong industry choice to Figma would be dishonest — the plugin ecosystem, market adoption, and sheer scale of Figma's own usage are genuinely not close. Naming this plainly here doesn't diminish Penpot's own real value, especially its self-hosting capability; it just means the comparison in this course is honestly framed rather than artificially balanced.
