Why Lighting Matters More Than It Might Seem
Lighting doesn't just make a scene visible — it's what actually reveals a material's own Roughness and Metallic properties from Chapter 6, since those properties are entirely about how a surface responds to light hitting it. The exact same model and material can look completely different depending on where light comes from, how strong it is, and how many separate light sources are involved.
Lamp Types: Point, Sun, Spot, and Area
Point simulates a small light bulb radiating light equally in all directions from a single point. Sun simulates a distant, extremely powerful light source (like the actual sun) casting parallel, directional light evenly across an entire scene, regardless of the lamp's own specific position. Spot simulates a focused, cone-shaped beam, like a flashlight or stage spotlight. Area simulates light coming from a flat surface (a softbox or window), producing notably softer, more diffuse shadows than a Point or Spot light of similar strength.
Light Strength and Color
Strength controls how bright a lamp actually is, and Color tints the light itself — a warm, slightly orange light reads as an incandescent bulb or late-afternoon sun, while a cooler, slightly blue light reads as overcast daylight or fluorescent lighting. Both properties affect every material in the scene that light actually reaches.
The World Background: Ambient Environment Light
Beyond individual lamps, Blender's own World settings provide ambient background light and (optionally) a background image, filling in some general illumination across the whole scene rather than relying entirely on individual lamps for every bit of light. A simple, evenly-lit gray World background is often enough for straightforward scenes, while a more elaborate environment image can add realistic reflections and ambient color.
Basic Three-Point Lighting Setup
A classic three-point setup uses a Key light (the main, strongest light source, usually positioned to one side), a Fill light (a softer, weaker light on the opposite side, reducing harsh shadow on that side without eliminating shadow entirely), and a Rim/Back light (positioned behind the subject, separating it visually from the background). This simple three-lamp pattern reliably produces a well-defined, professional-looking result across a huge range of different subjects.
How Lighting Interacts With Materials From Chapter 6
A glossy, low-roughness material reflects a light source's own shape directly and sharply — a small Point light produces a small, sharp highlight, while a large Area light produces a broad, soft highlight on that exact same material. Choosing lamp types deliberately, with a specific material's own properties in mind, produces noticeably more convincing results than lighting a scene generically without considering what's actually being lit.
