As mentioned in the introduction, one of the reasons I am creating this page is to help myself in learning Hungarian. In doing that, I don't want to get bogged down in the technical aspects of grammar, but to produce something that is a little more practical. I think that by learning to speak the language, certain aspects of the grammar will become apparent without having to be learned as a separate subject although, learning in this way may lead to a desire to explore the grammar in a more formal way. For the time being, my intention is to learn some useful words and then start to build sentences with them.

We will start with the word for I which in Hungarian is én.

In Hungarian, I is very different from English. You will see different forms for it, but in connection with verbs, it is not required because the verb ending indicates the person. For example, I want is szeretnék. But if you are saying something like I want to do something, it is azt akarom. In a sentence, the azt can be (or sould be?) dropped.

The verb to eat is enni so I want to eat is enni akarom. The word for something is valami, so, I want to eat something is enni akarom valamit.
